StitchBinge
Black Hole Frame Kit
Scary? Perhaps. Gorgeous? Definitely! So why not put on your guiltiest of guilty pleasure shows and stitch away at a mind-bending astronomical force? This design is a bit less symmetrical than some designs, so it's a fantastic way to get started if you're looking for a first project.
This project is a lovely pop of color for adults and a great project to stitch by, with, or for a kid. And remember, all our Science and Space themed kits use the same coordinated colors, so you can start with one and build your own StitchBinge Galaxy!
Now, some knowledge. In 2019, after more than a decade of work, a global team of over 200 astronomers and computer scientists accomplished what was once thought impossible by capturing an image of a black hole. Dr Katie Bouman, a 29 year old computer scientist, created an algorithm and led a project team to develop a program to translate telescopic data into the now-famous photograph.
"I think that this picture has really captured the imaginations of a generation of new young scientists," Bouman said. "I think that getting that interest in science to students at a young age will help them enter the STEM [science, technology, engineering and mathematics] fields and make contributions to many different projects."
We love a woman that thinks big. Just how big? Well, the black hole the team photographed is 6.5 BILLION TIMES more massive than our Sun. That's not a typo. But fear not, it's also 53 million light-years (318 quintillion miles) away.
